Haitian Blue

Postby Weyesa » Mon May 21, 2012 6:09 am

A friend is in the process of adopting a little boy from Haiti. She's promised to bring me back some green beans but it will probably be many months before she goes, so all I can do in the meantime is obsess. I did a little research on the internet, so I know the things I learned are absolutely true. This is that the webz said: Haiti was once one of the world's largest coffee producers, back in colonial times. In modern times, coffee production fell off in favor of other crops that bring in better money. The premium coffee is grown from the Typica cultivar and is called Haitian Blue or Bleu, en creole. People fall all over themselves to compare it to Jamaican Blue, something of a red flag, in my opinion.

Still, some people swear by it and not all of them seem to be selling. Does anyone know anything about premium Haitian coffee? Any idea why it's not listed in Sweet Maria's offerings? I can imagine it would be difficult to get consistent, high quality beans exported. Already poor infrastructure ravaged by the earthquake, impenetrable regulations, corruption, difficulties raising capital for processing all sound like likely suspects. But, really, is it any more difficult than other places? Or is it just that the quality is not consistently there?

I was able to visit 4 Dominican Republic beans recently - these had a lot of defects and weird shapes - the sorting isn't as good as what you come to expect - this might not be the case over on the Haiti side of the island though.

If it was great, the world would know something about it is my take.

I'd bet you are right on all counts. There are places to buy Haitian green coffee beans. Here's one that sells beans harvested in 2010, shipped March 2011, for $6 a pound: http://www.haiticoffee.com/shop.html
Vietnam exports HUGE amounts of coffee but we never see specialty offerings from there, either.

Thanks, All. I guess I could get a picture of what to expect from Sweet Maria's description of Dominican coffees, being the Eastern side of Hispaniola island. Sounds like typical Caribbean profile with many of the problems I listed in my original post. It's hard to believe Haiti would be easier to manage than the Dominican Republic.
