A friend is in the process of adopting a little boy from Haiti. She's promised to bring me back some green beans but it will probably be many months before she goes, so all I can do in the meantime is obsess. I did a little research on the internet, so I know the things I learned are absolutely true. This is that the webz said: Haiti was once one of the world's largest coffee producers, back in colonial times. In modern times, coffee production fell off in favor of other crops that bring in better money. The premium coffee is grown from the Typica cultivar and is called Haitian Blue or Bleu, en creole. People fall all over themselves to compare it to Jamaican Blue, something of a red flag, in my opinion.
Still, some people swear by it and not all of them seem to be selling. Does anyone know anything about premium Haitian coffee? Any idea why it's not listed in Sweet Maria's offerings? I can imagine it would be difficult to get consistent, high quality beans exported. Already poor infrastructure ravaged by the earthquake, impenetrable regulations, corruption, difficulties raising capital for processing all sound like likely suspects. But, really, is it any more difficult than other places? Or is it just that the quality is not consistently there?
