Gene Cafe chaff ++

Postby Barrie » Tue May 15, 2012 12:25 pm

I did about my fifth run with the new Gene Cafe this morning and, for the first time, did a pre-warm to 300 and pulled the container before it went into cooling. The roasts were two batches of 226g each of SM #20 Gneiss Shot blend and I was startled to see how much chaff there was in the container each time. I also noted each time that the exit vent slots in the container lid were partially plugged with caramelized chaff, and I am sure this impeded exit of the rest of it. There was also a little smoke when I detached the container. Each time, the container had been well-cleaned prior to using.
Does this occur from time to time with the GC? Is that blend particularly chaff-producing? It is my first experience with it, and I did not like this set of circumstances.
The roast profile was:
Preheat to 300
Fill container and turn heat to 482 for the duration.
1C at about 11 min.
Container pulled at 12:30 before 2C obvious.
The beans are at about FC+.
Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Some coffees do have more Chaff then others, from my experience the Gene does a good job of sucking up the chaff. I suppose you will rest this for a few days before pulling a shot but let us know the result.

Thanks, Erica. I suspect I will get to the Gneiss Shot on Thursday or Friday. I am enjoying some Liquid Amber at the moment.

As discussed, some coffee produces more than others.

That said, After every batch, I make sure there is no chaff remaining on the Cannister vent. After every session I use a vacume and clean the inside of the Chaff Collector and the exit vents.

The GC does a great job based on my observations as well. I will say that after dumping the coffee, I do take some time to ensure all the stubborn chaff is off the beans by rubbing the freshly roasted beans around in a metal collander.

Hope this helps

Obviously I need to get a bit more experience with the GC. My main concern was whether I have a faulty fan and not sufficient oomph to eject the chaff effectively. That said, I ran a few batches prior to this without any problem whatsoever. Need to try a different bean next time.
