No sweetener or milk/cream? In praise of home-roasted!

Postby bigbells » Sat Mar 17, 2012 8:35 am

I'm delightfully stunned by the fact that I find the home-roasted coffees in my mammoth 3 weeks of home-roasting experience to have a sweetness and smoothness that I find need neither added sweetener nor the addition of any milk product to be absolutely awesome! I am not the least bit opposed to the addition of bourbon, tequila or vodka. These home-roasted coffees are the best mixers ever!

I'm not sure just how long I'd been roasting when I finally remembered my firm intention to try a cup without the usual splash of half & half that I'd been automatically adding to any cup of coffee for decades. In any event, it had been long enough, and I've never gone back except on rare occasions that I have a cup elsewhere than home and find it less than palatable black. I try really hard to avoid that...

Bailey's is great stuff, and for sipping straight I think nothing is better. For flavoring coffee, however, I prefer the Carrolan's brand. Wonder if I still have some in the fridge, though the roasted coffees I have on hand aren't really ones I'd choose for this if I were planning on such a concoction. Hmmm, what would be best? I'm thinking something from the darker end of my palette, maybe one of the cleaner Sumatrans, or - hey, I do have a bit of Fazenda Aurea left in the stash. Too bad the thought didn't arrive sooner.

Well, I've finally done it... two roasts that I've done in the last couple of days, sitting in unlabeled jars, and I can't for the life of me remember for sure which beans I used for either roast. But they'll be good!

Even in my "Pre Roasting Days", I never put anything in my coffee. Every now and then I would add some Sweet and Low in a evening cup as a form of desert, but I have never liked anything in my coffee.

Since roasting my own, I am even more addicted to Nothing! Home Roasted sweetness is such a great addition to so many things. I have used Fresh Grounded Ethiopian on a Steak as seasoning with Garlic, Salt and Pepper and found it INCREDIBLE! My cigars are always better with a cup of coffee than with a "Single Barrel on the Rocks", but I still enjoy both. :D

This Home Roasting Stuff is pretty Damn Fun!!!

I agree.
For about 30+ years, I drank coffee with 1/2 & 1/2 (or whole milk). I started homeroasting a year ago and since then have enjoyed my coffee black.

If I have mediocre coffee outside of my house, I often find the need to add some dairy to it.
