noobie from Sebastopol

Hiya -

Just placed my first order and it arrived this AM - the next day. I am very close to Sweet Maria (70 miles or so), but UPS is still fast IMO. I am a part time potato farmer and work full time as an engineer for a company that makes airflow measurement instruments. I am pretty pedestrian when it comes to coffee tastes and usually prefer French Roast and many of my early mornings are spent at a local coffee place called Johnny's Java, but I still make a cup at home before I get there. I finally stopped buying Costco bags and was buying at the local Oliver's where I sell my potatoes, but at $10 per bag I had to give it up. I'd rather support the small farmers anyway since in some circles I am considered one. So I already have a heat gun and stainless steel dog bowls and a shop vac and some other unused goodies that would enable me to put together a fancier roaster, but I will probably be too impatient to build anything and just roast some tonight after our company Xmas Party. I think Sat AM (before the dump run) maybe very pleasant!

Anyway - I shopped and shopped for green coffee beans and kept coming back to Sweet Maria's. I didn't see anything out there that looked better. If Tom is lacking something, it ain't passion for his product!

Cheers! Denny

Spuds and engineering, huh? You sure you don't have a couple potato cannon in the back of the garage? :-)

Gun & bowl is a *great* way to learn about roasting - you're not just close to the process, you are a big part of it. I wouldn't want to go back to that (I started after getting, unexpectedy, an 8lb sampler one Christmas), as it's always too cold or too hot, and always changing out on our porch, but I don't know a better way to quickly learn about what's going on during the roast.

Welcome!

Welcome Denny!

Nice to see another newbie heat gun roaster. I've just started out too, and I'm really enjoying the process, and the coffee. Usually I roast decaf, but have also done some regular coffee roasts for family and friends. I'm enjoying the learning process, and how much feedback you get (sights, smells, sounds, etc) while standing over the roast. Each time there are ways I can think to tweak the next roast, try to make it better. But there are also times when I just relax and see where the roast takes me.

Lucky you, living in Sebastopol - I hear it's beautiful and a wonderful place to live. Hope to visit there someday (I'm all the way on the other side of the country in Massachusetts)

Enjoy your adventures in roasting, and keep us posted on how things go.

Well I found out my shop vac is too powerful so I am now well practiced in retrieving roasted beans from the patio floor. Potato farmers are notoriously cheap and don't mind consuming things in contact with the ground!

Next engineering fete will be to put a nice screen cover on the mesh colander and let that shop vac rip.

Many favorable compliments on the coffee despite my 3rd world roasting prowess. Cheers from potatoland.
