Use, a USB connection would be very nice, but I suspect the simplicity of the little timer isn't up to handling that kind of interface. The temperature environment is also a potential problem for any computerized boards in any roaster.

I just roasted a batch of Kenya Nyeri AA - Kagumo Coop and there was a lot of chaff in the screen. But the way the air bypasses the "trap", it isn't a problem at all.

Long lasting -- sure. But I really wonder how many people push the machine beyond it's design parameters by double-batching and not waiting the 2 hours between cycles, or people who roast too much at a time which causes excessive heat retention. No problems so far with mine. I feel I have much more visual control over my roasting than I would with a Behmore where you can't really "see" the beans. Nothing intended against the Behmore, as I'll probably own one shortly, just a difference in the way you control the roast.

I never double batched - only roasted every other week - only lasted 6mo - had to repair a back connection - now it stopped again 6mo later. That being said - I just bought a second one - nothing else on the market that comes close.

What Polly at Hearthware said today?

Postby mikeb68 » Tue Jan 12, 2010 2:20 pm

I just got off the phone with Polly at IRoast/Hearthware. I have had 2 units now and they have both shut down during roasting. (First one under warranty, the second replaced before first warranty was expired; I wanted a replacement base) She said they would sell me a replacement base "for
>
>$111.20 plus shipping!" And that's discounted 20% --like they are doing me a favor

*ODDLY* they have REPLACEMENT BASES in stock but NO NEW UNITS until March?? Figure that one out!
These are coming from China not made in Illinois--they are going down the toilet with their business

 Poor product + Poor service = Bad business.

Mine is 3 years old. Lately I've had to start unplugging it between uses as the controller board stays warm even when not in use. Also, lately its started kicking into cooling mode out of the blue, long before the roast is done, and I have to start over. I run all the upper parts through the dishwasher periodically. That keeps the screen nice and clean. Not a very robust piece of hardware. I'll be looking for something more substantial when it finally dies.

I bought a new one - and every thing just worked - until I stored the 7th program.

The LCD display started showing garbage - random segments - no response from the controls - unplugged it and it acted like it was working, but when it ran the programs it did wrong temperatures. From what I can figure is it can only hold 5 programs or so - if you store more, so memory over flows and it get messed up. I have not seen any information about how to completely reset the machine - a factory reset.

If anyone knows please pass it on to karl@xtronics.com

You can reset the iRoast2. See this FAQ by Tom and check the information under the Cold Weather Roasting question midway down the page.

But why would you want 7 profiles? Not criticizing, just asking. :D

I have been using my I-Roast 2 for quite a while and today it just stopped in mid-roast. Nothing changed in my roasting, same beans, same amount, same profile, not really in need of a cleaning, started with a cold machine. After several hours I tried it again and it stopped again. Anyone know why it does this?

I would try the simple things first. Are you unplugging your machine between roasts? Also try the link above to reset the little computer chip.

I always unplug between roasts, but I will look at the reset tip. What I find odd is the unexplained nature of the shut down. I am not doing anything different and I have had very good success up until this point.
