Behmor Profile for Espresso Blends

Postby sven » Mon Aug 13, 2012 3:25 pm

I was wondering if anyone had experimented with the various profiles for roasting the espresso blends. I am currently using 1/2 pound batches of #24 (El Competidor) using P3 with 1:30 loaded warmup on P1. I also have batches of Liquid Amber and Monkey Blend that I have not yet roasted. I will try some P1 roasts to see if it brings out the brightness of the cup without losing too much body. Has anyone messed around with the profiles for these roasts?

I have not compared different profiles for blends... I think I've tried only P2 on the blends that I have. They have all been good, and Monkey Blend is really tasty. I do 8 oz, use 1:30 "preroast", then 1/2 P2 C. I've been pressing Cool about 10-40 seconds after second crack starts.

Thanks, I will give P2 a try and compare. I assume you use "C" so as to push that temperature drop further down the timeline (somewhere after first crack as opposed to using "B" where the drop occurs just prior to first crack?).

That's exactly right. I'm still experimenting and as far as I know B may work even better, but C has worked for me so far and it tends to drop power 10-30 seconds after first crack starts.

I was never able to get what I thought was an acceptable espresso roast out of the Behmor. In my view, the machine simply will not develop enough heat to really get you espresso roast - and no, I don't roast them black.

Perfect example: Kenya. In the old days of the iRoast2, i added some Kenya to my blend to get a little fruit into it. The Behmor made it impossible to do Kenya as anything other than single origin, and then only for brewed coffee - too much "juicy fruit" -

Got a FreshRoast a month ago, did an espresso blend with Kenya back in last night - perfecdto!

David, I think most would say that the Behmor can develop plenty of heat, enough to provide the user with a respectable bean fire if desired. Maybe there are other factors affecting your experience...

Personally I am trying to roast lighter. I believe I was going into light Vienna, or Full City +. I dislike finding charcoal taste in my brews (which is sporadic -- but annoying). I'm trying to avoid going in to 2nd crack, using extra cooling if necessary when I detect the first snaps. But I'm trying to do City + roasts unless Tom's roasting advice calls for something darker.

When I started espresso I bought some of Counter Culture Coffee's Toscano, their go-to espresso product, and it was a light or medium roast, very light by my standards. It might be worth exploring the lighter roasts. But the Behmor is supposed to be capable of Vienna.

I'm going to try the P2 C 1/2 lb. for my Espresso blends. I am very pleased I started using the forums, don't know why I didn't earlier.

P2, C is not a combination that the roaster will allow. With P2, you've got to use either A or B.

Dave I checked my roaster and P2,C works, giving 14:00 for the 1/2 pound setting. Press P2 first then C and I think it will work for you.

Those wanting to try P2 be careful, you may want to do a "preroast" to get the timing of the drop correct. There's a thread on using P2 if that helps.

Sorry for the misinformation. I must have misinterpreted the Behmor manual, which says:
"When using P1 or P2, in certain instances, Program times C and/or D, may appear not to
function. This was designed to occur. In those instances C and/or D’s pre-programmed start times
exceed the maximum allowed roast time for that profile."
