The sunbeam target sells is good and very easy to modify. You'll find plenty of info about this popper around this forum.

I found another Poppery II. Maybe they're still the preferred roasting popper out there?

Okay. I am very new to personal roasting. Just started using the Presto Poplite (1440 watt version) and I have smoke-checked 4 batches. I think I have one good one now but the roasting times are VERY fast. The one batch that I think is good tonight was done in 3 min 30 sec. The other batch at 4 min smelled like campfire. Anyone else having similar times with this popper? I know it is not the "right" kind but I had it in hand before I knew what I was doing. Is that long enough to roast the coffee thru? It gets really hot so I don't think the temp is lacking, just not sure if it has a chance to cook thru. These times just seem very short compared to other posts that I have been reading. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

That does seem very fast- almost too fast in my opinion to be able and control the roast at all. Can you discern between the cracks? At that speed my guess is that first and second crack run right together...? I'm guessing the high wattage is to blame for the high speed of roasting? I also wonder how fast the coffee is turning, if you use less coffee (so it spins faster and cools a bit), that might slow it down somewhat.

I have a few poppers that work that I have listed here. The toastmaster sometimes roasts pretty fast, but not as fast as what you described:

Has anybody roasted in a Salton Popcorn Maker? I just picked one up today but haven't tried it yet. Looks very similar in design to the Poppery II.

Here it is:

I use the highly-coveted West Bend The Poppery (not Poppery 2) and have used it since I began roasting 3 years ago :-)

No modifcations. I roast only SM beans and only organic. I roast to 2nd crack always, which gives me a FC+ roast and perfect beans everytime!

I was using a cleaned can with bottom cut out the bottom to direct air and chaff, but found it wasn't necessary. I now pop without the top or butter measurer on and the chaff blows up through the top nicely (I let it blow around my rosebushes and roast on the front porch. Perfect). No beans escape or pop out ever. I stir frequently.

This popper achieves first crack within 4 minutes and second crack before the 5 minute mark. Subsequent roasts (I roast up to 4 batches at a time, at 1/3 cup green beans per roast) achieve a faster 2nd crack since the popper is already heated.

I LOVE this popper! I see one on ebay right now for $80 and am tempted to bid, but I only paid $35 for this one. They're apparently hard to find.

This is a solid, heavy machine and roasts PERFECTLY every single time.

I hosted a Front Porch Roast tonight in Indian. It's 50s, but perfect roasting weather with a breeze. I use 2 metal mesh collanders to immediately cool the beans, then dump from there on a cookie sheet.

I have roasted in our garage and basment, too in freezing weather. Keep this popper indoors so it doesn't freeze.

Love this popper/coffee roaster! I don't know if it was ever used prior as a popper but looked brand new when I bought it.
